Going to the Restaurant (Off We Go)
Written by Avril Webster
Illustrated by David Ryley
Storybooks created by an Irish Mum for her own son Stephen – but… more than just storybooks!
Off We Go books are beautifully illustrated, engaging social storybooks for children that explain ‘what comes next’ on an outing. They are designed to help children to get through the task sequentially making it easier for them. The colourful books are very suitable for children with autism or other social communication difficulties. They are also useful for children who are learning English as an additional language.
Each book provides the following benefits:
- Children will learn day to day skills
- Supports language development and communication
- Builds confidence and self-esteem
- Provides children with structure and routine
- Shows children ‘what comes next’ to prepare them for new experiences
- Improve the quality of life for children and their families – when children know what is happening they can manage better and everyone is happier
- Simple, clear, large pictures and accompanying text describing the task
- A sequence of 12 steps bringing the child through the task, as recommended by speech and language therapists
- The same multi-ethnic family of characters is used, some of whom have a disability, to promote familiarity and learning
Going to the Restaurant describes the activity of going to the restaurant using 12 pictures in a sequence. This book is particularly aimed at pre-school children and children with special needs to support language development and communication. By using this book to prepare your child for going to the restaurant, they will be happier and able to manage the experience. You can use the book as a prompt to play restaurant at home and to talk about your child's favourite food. It is helpful to bring the book along with you to the restaurant so the child can visually see what stage/picture they are at. There is a clock used to show that we have to wait for our food after ordering. The book also gives opportunity to talk about the other people that will be at the restaurant and the importance of manners.
