Going to the Optician (Off We Go)

Written by Avril Webster
Illustrated by David Ryley

Storybooks created by an Irish Mum for her own son Stephen – but… more than just storybooks!

Off We Go books are beautifully illustrated, engaging social storybooks for children that explain ‘what comes next’ on an outing. They are designed to help children to get through the task sequentially making it easier for them. The colourful books are very suitable for children with autism or other social communication difficulties. They are also useful for children who are learning English as an additional language.

Each book provides the following benefits:

  • Children will learn day to day skills
  • Supports language development and communication
  • Builds confidence and self-esteem
  • Provides children with structure and routine
  • Shows children ‘what comes next’ to prepare them for new experiences
  • Improve the quality of life for children and their families – when children know what is happening they can manage better and everyone is happier
Each book provides the following features:

  • Simple, clear, large pictures and accompanying text describing the task
  • A sequence of 12 steps bringing the child through the task, as recommended by speech and language therapists
  • The same multi-ethnic family of characters is used, some of whom have a disability, to promote familiarity and learning

Going to the Optician describes the activity of going to the optician using 12 pictures in a sequence. This book is particularly aimed at pre-school children and children with special needs to support language development and communication. By using this book to prepare your child for going on, they will be happier and able to manage the experience. The book can be used it to help prepare your child that they will have to wait for their turn, what the optician is likely to do with them (e.g. shine light in their eyes), and the fact that they will not get their new glasses straight away.
